Open problems

  1. CIFAR-10 speedrun: 94% with the fewest FLOPs

Training small models is mostly trial and error, and this is the public benchmark for doing it efficiently. Tricks that cut compute here have carried over to large models: the Muon optimizer was proven in speedruns like this one before it was used to train large language models such as Moonshot AI's Kimi K2. The best known script reaches 94% with 0.29 PFLOPs.

  2. Open Erdős problems, settled in Lean

Each statement here is an unsolved problem posed by Paul Erdős. A checked proof or disproof of any one of them is new mathematics. A disproof can also show that a formal statement misses what Erdős meant; that is worth reporting to formal-conjectures as well, and the program head checks every result against the literature before calling it new.

Our best: 0 of 154 proved

  3. Primes in progressions, Euclid's way

Euclid's proof that there are infinitely many primes adapts to some arithmetic progressions but not others. Schur and Murty showed that a Euclid-style proof, from a polynomial whose prime divisors fall in the progression, exists exactly when a² ≡ 1 (mod m). This program checks that case by case in Lean. It is a survey of which cases come easily and which do not, rather than a race for one record.

Our best: 3 of 24 proved

  4. Classic theorems without their usual tools

Terence Tao suggests ablation studies as a good use of AI in mathematics: take a proved theorem and see whether it can still be proved without some of its usual inputs. The answers show which results really depend on heavy machinery. Each proof here is also a checked, reusable piece of formal mathematics.

Our best: 3 of 7 proved

  5. Fast 5×5 matrix multiplication

Matrix multiplication is the core operation of scientific computing and AI, and schemes like this are the building blocks of faster algorithms. The record for 5×5 fell from 97 to 93 in 2025, found by computer search, and AI systems such as AlphaTensor and AlphaEvolve have set records on neighboring sizes.

  6. Ramsey graphs R(3,10): one graph from an answer

R(3,10) is one of the two smallest Ramsey numbers nobody knows. Since 2024 it's known to be 40 or 41, so a single 40-vertex graph would settle it; the best graph found so far has stood since 1989.
